New Web Page About VOA Jazz Legend Willis Conover Printer Friendly Version E-mail this article to a friend Our new Willis Conover web page is just launched, shortly in advance of the 17 September “Voices of Freedom” jazz concert (open to the public) commemorating Conover’s popular Music USA international broadcasts. Broadcasting on VOA from 6 January 1955 until shortly before his death on 17 May 1996, he was well known overseas, particularly in countries behind the Iron Curtain. But Conover was little known in the United States outside jazz circles since VOA does not broadcast inside the United States. The Conover web page provides most prominently a gallery of downloadable, high-resolution historic photos, a collection of downloadable audio clips, and a biographical brochure. There is also a new listing of events connected to Willis Conover and jazz at VOA, a link to his collection of personal papers at the University at North Texas, and an interview with Terence M. Ripmaster, author of "Willis Conover: Broadcasting Jazz to the World." We expect to expand the collection as new items and links become available, so please send us your information and suggestions, and check back for additions. |
